The Benaki Phytopathological Institute (B.P.I.) is constituted as a not for profit, Public Entity Research Institute, engaged in all matters pertaining to plant health protection. It operates under the supervision of the Ministry of Rural Development and Food.
Founded in 1929 through a legacy by National Benefactor Emmanouel Benakis (Law 4160/1929, Gov. Gazette 198A΄), its inauguration, on July 1st, 1931 was attended by the Prime Minister Eleftherios Venizelos.
Members of the original scientific team of the Institute, and two of its subsequent Directors include Konstantinos A. Isaakidis, Professor of Entomology and Ioannis A. Saregiannis, Professor of Phytopathology of the Agricultural College of Athens (currently the Agricultural University of Athens).
